The Titanic was believed to be unsinkable until it struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, about 153 km south of Newfoundland near the Grand Banks ( 45° 00' N / 53° 00' W), and sank early next morning. The loss of the Titanic during its maiden voyage is one of the worst disasters in maritime history. Of more than 2,200 passengers and crew on board, over 1,500 died.
