The song provoked much controversy and negative reactions from political figures such as then-President George H.W. Bush. Others defended the song on the basis of the band's First Amendment rights. Some death threats were sent to Warner Bros. Records executives, and some stockholders threatened to pull out of the company. Ice-T chose to recall the album and re-release it without the inclusion of the song. "Cop Killer" was replaced by the Song "Freedom of Speech".
